I used to watch NCIS back in the day, but haven't in awhile because I thought it was too repetitive. Anyway, I learned on tvguide.com this morning that Cote de Pablo, who plays Ziva, is leaving the show. Seems she's the only one of the regular cast who could not come to terms on a new contract. At least that's what they're saying the reason is. Whether or not they'll have her come back to actually 'wrap up her storyline' like they say they're going to--or if she'll just be in the wind and gone like Ray Langston was--remains to be seen. I don't think her departure will affect the show all that much, as Mark Harmon is firmly entrenched as its star. What does everyone else think of this news?

I've only watched NCIS sporadically so I'm not sure as to the specific impact. That being said, I was thinking the other day about when the "star" of a show leaves and what impact it has on the show's survival.
Yes I am speaking of CSI. I think WP stayed too long. I think if he wanted out then for the show's sake he should have left somewhere in the 4th or 5th season. I'm not saying that I wanted him gone but that for the "star" of the show to leave after 9 nine years I feel is just too long to be identified with a show.
Lastly, I've always had a hard time seeing CSI as a true ensemble show. Especially when you put it up against a show like The West Wing which I feel was an ensemble. There was no star of that show. No one person who's eyes everything was seen through. And IMHO one of the best shows around...

I love NCIS just as much as i love CSI and i am sad that Cote is leaving. Not sure how they will write her out but they did say she would be in the first episode. I'm thinking it will have something to do with her killing the man she believed to be responsible for the death of her father and Director Vance wife. Ziva has been pretty messed up since her father was murdered. At the end of last season they all quit because of the investigation into Gibbs. They felt the best way to help Gibbs was to quit.
What will Tony do without Ziva...

A couple of interesting questions on TVG online about Cote leaving and how it might be handled.
Question: I am completely shocked and saddened that Cote de Pablo is leaving NCIS. What is behind her departure? — Tina
Matt Roush: By all accounts, including her own statement, this was Cote de Pablo's choice to depart the show after eight seasons, although she will appear in at least a few episodes in the upcoming season to wrap up the character's story — and, one presumes, relationships with the core cast (let's hope without a fatality, since that's been done, literally to death). This is not uncommon for stars of long-running and successful shows — think ER, which lost just about every one of its original players over time — but it's definitely an unfortunate development for this series and for fans, especially of the Tiva "shipper" variety. Which leads to this next question, which arrives in the mailbag before the news of de Pablo's departure.
Question: About the Tiva issue [Tony and Ziva for the non-NCIS initiated]: A few seasons ago, Tony and Ziva were in Paris on agency business, where they had to share the last available hotel room. When Tiva returned stateside, Tony and Ziva casually tell different stories about who slept where. I believe Ziva says that she let Tony have the bed, or he would be complaining about his back for the next week. However, Tony says that he slept on the couch. I expected more to follow that season. But nada followed. I played back the episode several times after the season finale and failed to find total satisfactory closure on the issue. Rather than belabor the issue and diminish my viewing pleasures, I choose to believe that Tony and Ziva had a fantastically rewarding and very private romantic interlude in Paris, which they, thankfully, do not share with their fellow agents, colleagues or the viewing masses, unlike their mentors Jethro and Jenny. Would love to hear additional views or information on this particular episode/issue. — Claudette
Matt Roush: Ah yes, they'll always have Paris, whatever did or didn't transpire there, and the show's producers were very cagey, purposefully so, about keeping the details a mystery, so as to stimulate the imaginations of fans and shippers to this very day. I'm sure you're not alone in imagining what might have (and very possibly did) happen in the City of Light. One way for the producers to go as they bid Ziva farewell is to shed new light on this infamous incident, giving shippers the gift they've so long awaited. Even so, separating Ziva from Tony will not be a happy day for many of the fanbase.

This from TV Line. The answer I thought was a little snippy.
Do you think Cote de Pablo’s departure spells the end for NCIS? With Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. rivaling for No. 1, I don’t see NCIS staying at the top without her, and I know many Tiva shippers are leaving the show with Cote. –Mary Catherine
OK, for one, it’s not “the end of NCIS.” TV’s most watched program isn’t abruptly going to crater because one member of a good-sized, top-notch ensemble leaves. Will its numbers get dinged? Maybe. A bit. But it’d have to lose 3 million viewers to fall behind Big Bang Theory and cease being TV’s most watched (non-sports) program. The whole debate is: What fraction of that total viewership has been tuning in just for Ziva, and/or just for “Tiva.” S.H.I.E.L.D.’s more direct competition, I imagine, is The Originals, as those two first duke it out for the genre-TV-loving eyeballs, before either start eating into CBS’ older-skewing audience.

This from TV Line...This seems to be the only show that has any news
Question: Any news on a replacement for Ziva on NCIS? —Cathy
Ausiello: Yep, and pretty big news at that. As exec producer Gary Glasberg revealed to Matt Mitovich Monday night, it’s going to be “a little while” before a full-time agent is brought in to fill the void left by Cote de Pablo. But in the meantime, the show — taking a page from Bones‘ squintern playbook — will “rotate some fun people” through the agency’s doors. “The first two episodes are all about Ziva’s departure,” Glasberg notes. “And then in the third episode we introduce, for instance, a woman in her 50s who is a few days away from retirement and just needs to fill the desk time. She, in theory, knew Gibbs all the way back to the days of Mike Franks. So we’re going to bring in people like that and have some fun with different characters. And then, hopefully, when people are comfortable enough, one will walk in and be The One.”
I don't think taking a page from Bones is the way to go before replacing Ziva. Rotating the interns on Bones works because of the type of show it is. Doing this kind of rotating on NCIS will make it look like a comedy...a comedy of errors i'm afraid.

Yeah but I think CBS is worried that this will be the same problematic fiasco as bringing in someone to replace Grissom too fast..

Good point. Didn't think of that.
